To help us function as impressive thinkers in debates (and when writing persuasive arguments) we have been learning about Socratic thinking. A Socratic circle involves an inner group of students questioning a state ment and an outer circle of students thinking about the issues and watching the discussion as it proceeds.
Socratic circles were an invention of the ancient Greek philosopher Socrates who was sentenced to death for daring to question accepted thinking. He loved wisdom (philo=respectful love, sophia=wisdom).
